Conference
It will be an opportunity for Mathematics Educators and Researchers to meet in Lexington on May 20, 2010 for a day of work sessions related to how higher education will be involved in the implementation of the new core mathematics standards in Kentucky during the summer and coming year.

Title for the Conference: Towards the Roll Out: A Summit for Mathematics Educators and Researchers on The Roll Out of the Kentucky Core Mathematics Standards

Overview of the Meeting: The purpose of this meeting is to begin the discussion of the role of mathematics educators in the roll out of the mathematics standards.

Mathematics educators are: professors of mathematics education in higher education professors of mathematics in Arts and Sciences with experience or interest in mathematics education and research.

Projected Outcomes for the Summit:

1. Review what is happening in the institutions (research, development, dissemination, collaborations related to math education). Institutions will be encouraged to submit a one-page “brag” sheet prior to the conference, to be included in the conference materials, and serve as the starting point for a sharing session.

2. Face to face meeting of higher Education educators and researchers in mathematics learning…. Who are we? Where do we live? What are we involved in?

3. Learn from KDE: What is the Department’s idea of how the roll out will progress in the P-12 arena?

4. Review the RFA process for leadership teams (Content Leadership Networks)… How is the RFA process proceeding, and how might we be involved?

5. Stiggins work on formative assessment: How should the broad concept of Formative Assessment in Kentucky be understood? Will Stiggins work be required as a part of the roll out?

6. Defining next steps for higher education: What activities should we, as mathematics educators in higher education, expect to play in the roll out over the next year?
